The erotica in this book was not all that great, but the story around it made up for it. If I see the word "cream" used again as it is in this book, it might just make me vomit. Be that as it may, the story was kind of fun and I didn't guess the main villain's identity at all. It was a fun introduction to the series. If you can get over the lackluster sex scenes, the rest is good, at least to me. I don't want a full on bodice ripper, but this one tried to be subtle and use language that might sound sexy if you didn't get nauseated by the phrasing. The characters are not bad either, but most of them are rather shallow. The main character is the only one we know very much about at all. My only real problem with this book is that it wasn't formatted to have chapter demarcations. In a book this length, I find that chapter demarcations are absolutely essential. Chapter demarcations make it so much easier to find see how close you are to the end of a chapter or to find a stopping place when you need to do so. I won't bore you with a plot summary as I know other reviewers are fond of doing that. If you like modern urban fantasy stories, you might just like this one even if it is gentler than most of the others. If you like erotica, this book is probably not for you unless you like food, specifically dairy products, and sex being interchangeable in definitions. Have at it in the first case because I don't think you'll be disappointed if you can ignore the attempt at erotica. In the second case, if erotica is all you want, this book might not be for you as it is kind of tame and dry and the wording/phrasing is stomach turning to some like me. I can't wait to read the next one.Tags : Hotter After Midnight [Cynthia Eden] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <B>A Seductive Nighttime World. . . </B><P> Dr. Emily Drake's psychotherapy patients tend to be a little unusual. Another enjoyable novel from Cynthia Eden. Hotter After Midnight was a combination of Paranormal Romance and Suspense.
This was a story of a string of murders, that involved Others. Emily Drake is a Psychiatrist who also has a gift of Empath. She can sense Others, or anyone who's not human.
Colin Gyth is a detective searching for answers on who the murderer is. But he's not all that he seems. He's an Other, who Emily immediately realizes. She distrusts and fears him, but has to work with him.
Emily and Colin give in and learn to work together, and eventually get past the mistrusts. They each have secrets they are trying to keep hidden, but only when these secrets are revealed can they build from one another. The emotions are high, the chemistry is there and the attraction builds to a point of no return. This novel has some really sizzling romantic scenes. Very well written. There was lots of action, suspense and mystery. Everything I am looking for in a great novel.
Just read this first book in the Midnight Trilogy by Eden, and I wish I could say I loved it, but I didn't. It was just OK. Had a pretty thin plot, and I found the dialogue "clunky" & a bit cheesy - just not very natural. One thing that drove me crazy was having so many sentences in the dialogue cut short at the end with a long dash....like the character had been interrupted just before finishing what they were saying. It happens continuously throughout the book. So I'd describe the writing style as unpolished, which I could deal with if the story was great.
But I didn't find the story so great - again, just OK. As for romance, there's not much build up on that front....it just sort of happens early on. And the plot - it was pretty basic; guess I just need a little more mystery, intrigue and action. I'm usually pretty lenient with my critiques, but I'd give this one a 2.5. I also hate to give up, and I know how "first books" can be. So I'll check out the sample for book 2. But if the writing style hasn't improved, I'm movin' on (especially with the kindle version priced on the high side). Unfortunately I tend to compare other writers to Moning, Andrews, Briggs, Laurenston..... I know all can't be this good, but I need something that's a little closer & with a stronger female lead.
Hotter After Midnight has a little bit of everything. It has mystery, gore, sexy scenes, a romance between a shifter and a human and some great suspense moments. Doctor Emily Drake has been dubbed the Monster Doctor since she helps the supernatural deal with issues that she has a special ability to gain insight to. She is going about her business as usual when she is called to help on a grizzly murder case which puts her right into the cross-hairs of a killer. I enjoyed this story which has many signature moments from Eden. It is fast paced and the romance never takes over the plot too much. I loved Emily and Colin and was excited to see them find clues and catch a killer. I definitely recommend to Eden fans and fans of paranormal romance suspense!
I was looking for something darker and edgier than my usual romantic suspense's and Cynthia certainly gave it to me in Hotter After Midnight! I loved everything about this book. Cynthia drew me in right away to Emily and Colin's world, made me curious, a little afraid of the dark, and wanting more!
Emily and Colin are a great hero and heroine who had enough going on in their lives that there was no need for any angst. I love these kind of characters. They are both strong with backgrounds I couldn't wait to read more about. I love how they unexpectedly come together, and the heat and passion between them is amazing. The paranormal in Hotter After Midnight was just right for me, and I enjoyed all the different aspects Cynthia wrote about. The suspense is thrilling and I was completely surprised by the who! I had no idea who the Night Butcher would be and I liked the journey Cynthia took me on.
This book was just what I was looking for and I can't wait to dive into the next one. Exciting and chilling, passionate and powerful, I highly recommend Hotter After Midnight to any paranormal romantic suspense reader!
