I loved the simplicity of this story. Franny is a part of me now! I had a grandmother that suffered from Alzheimer's and maybe, just maybe this is what she experienced. (Of course only her GOOD memories) I really enjoy this Debut Novel! Please Jennifer McGraw Miceli Write some more!!!
I found this story very beautiful and touching. The elements of the story were interwoven in a very skilful way that allowed me to vividly recreate important times in the whole of the main character's life; the way that the pipe smoke created a memory from the past - like Proust’s madeleines, in a sense - was poetic and very real, and the whole experience of drifting in and out of awareness of time and the material present, was handled perfectly. The narrative line was complex and broken and this made the task of piecing things together very unusual and stimulating, and never pretentious or merely for effect, and I think will sound a chord for many people whether or not they have had to share similar experiences. Jennifer McGraw-Miceli has a great gift for conveying intimacy and personal feeling though the eyes of another.
It was both an easy and an uneasy read. The writing style flowed effortlessy but the storyline was sad and heartbreaking to read. I found it to be surreal because the story was told from the perspective of a woman I had been acquainted with many years ago when I was young and actually frequented the Buccaneer Restaurant. Their successes and human failings made them a complex and fascinating family to know ---and to read. They were legendary and I am glad it was written in this way. Cancer and Alzheimer's are both dealt with honestly and it wrenched at my heart. This author gently, but frankly, turns back the page and allows us to peek into the rustically beautiful and unique microcosm that was, and still does linger with the ghosts out Ft George Island way.
Was a good read being I live in Jacksonville Enjoyed it I recommend it for a good quick read not sure if it was true story or not
The references to familiar locations and personalities were fun The story, sad and sweet. Unfortunately, the conversations giving
every spoken and dreamed word exchanged, seemed excessive. Leaving a bit of speculation to the reader might have given a warmer experience.
