It has it all, with lots of twists and turns, as well as great atmosphere, that kept me riveted.I enjoyed the alternating between the two main characters in every chapter and the way they eventually converge, albeit predictably. If I have a complaint, it's that somehow after a more leisurely and descriptive first third or so, the plot seemed to speed up and end rather hurriedly. The pace seemed uneven. Having real stories of the Old West that though seemingly preposterous are true, I didn't find any of the story too improbable, as a couple of other readers thought. And having read all of Ms. Kent's novels, I'm certainly looking forward to more like this one. I know "The Outcasts" would make a rip snorter of a movie.Tags : The Outcasts: A Novel [Kathleen Kent] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A taut, thrilling adventure story about buried treasure, a manhunt, and a woman determined to make a new life for herself in the old west. It's the 19th century on the Gulf Coast,Kathleen Kent,The Outcasts: A Novel,Little, Brown and Company,0316206121,Historical - General,Thrillers - Historical,Brothels;Fiction.,Gulf Coast (La.);History;19th century;Fiction.,Travelers;West (U.S);History;19th century;Fiction.,19th century,AMERICAN MYSTERY & SUSPENSE FICTION,Brothels,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Historical.,FICTION Romance Suspense,FICTION Thrillers Historical,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,FICTION Westerns,Fiction,Fiction - Historical,Fiction-Historical,GENERAL,General Adult,History,Romance - Suspense,Texas,Travelers,United States,West (U.S),Westerns - General, bisacsh

Kent weaves the stories of her characters together in surprising and suspenseful ways. Historical fiction at its best. Ms. Kent came to our book club to tell us about her inspiration for this novel.
Great literary historical fiction, this book has wonderful character development and some surprising plot twists in the setting of post Civil War era. Highly recommended.
Well written and very entertaining. Liked how Ms.Kent wove the story - so you never get bored and it was easy to follow. Storyline was good and this is an easy read. Suggestive enough to let you paint the picture, nice touch. For some reason I think this would appeal more to women than men....but what do I know! It's a good read.
A novel with fascinating twists and turns. Masterful language and fascinating characters keep the reader's attention. Set in post Civil War era, the story captures a view of Texas often overlooked in historical fiction.
Compared to Kathleen Kent's other novel Heretics Daughter, this was good, but mostly predictable and not nearly as well researched. It is more of a beach read. Currently reading The Traitor's Wife by Kent that is excellent.
Set in 1870's just after the civil, this novel shows the grittier side life then. The characters are tough and you will get to know them really well! It follows two really different characters as their paths come together for surprisingly satisfying ending.
The first quarter of the novel had only occasionally interesting passages, but then the two parts of the story began to come together. I kept thinking that if my father were still alive, he'd love this story . You get the story from two sides , female and male. You get a story that really tells you about evil--though from a removed perspective. You also learn what makes a woman become evil. Wonderful ending that brought it all together. A book to love and remember! The reader is wonderful if you're a listener. Highly recommended!
